1. The study of Mamluk land tenure and particularly of the iqta system is not a terra incognita, as can be deduced from the bibliography. Yet extremely important manuscripts by al-Quni and others were not investigated so far, to the best of my knowledge. The present project aims at studying land tenure and farming administration in medieval Syria and Egypt. The first step is establishing the original unpublished Arabic texts. It will be accompanied by an analysis of the legal argumentation. This research strategy will contribute to the study the political economy of the Mamluk sultanate in the 14th century.
